It's been a year, here's a progress report.

Hey kids,

So I've been running the Million Chairs Project for a year now and thought I would give you an update. I'm at number 430ish right now. I've been told that people thought I'd be a lot further along, and I always explain to them the three reasons I think I'm not. I'll do the same here.

Number 1: and I think this is the most important reason. People don't think they have something interesting to say. They get a chair, and in return I ask that they tell me something interesting about themselves. Unfortunately, being put on the spot like that renders people mute. They don't think the thing they have to say is interesting enough. Oddly though, it's anonymous. So even if the thing they say is really banal, no one would know it comes from them. Which leads me to reason number 2...

Number 2: No one lies. And even if they did, I wouldn't know it. So how do I know no one is lying? Because only 80 people have told me something interesting about themselves... Out of 430. Again, it's anonymous, so really they could tell me anything.

And Number 3: Some people want a real chair. I send chairs out with every purchase through Paul Pape Designs, and on more than one occasion I have received an email informing me that no chair was included in the box. I tell them it's a business card with a chair that you can assemble, and that's the last I hear from them. (and no interesting statement) My only conclusion is that they were expecting a real chair.

So that's where I'm at. If you have a chair, and haven't sent me your something interesting, feel free to do so. You can email it, and your chair number please, to paulpape(at)gmail.com and I'll post it in the twitter feed.
